Winter weather impacts Kansas again…and other headlines from the Today in Kansas Report: January 22, 2019

Parts of Kansas are dealing with another round of winter weather.  The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for north-central Kansas and a Blizzard Warning for northwestern Kansas until this evening.  Much of the northern part of the state could see ice, freezing drizzle and light snow, but snowfall amounts in the Goodland area could range from one to five inches.  Officials are warning about slick road conditions in the impacted areas.

Family and friends are looking for a Dickinson County man who went missing  a week ago. Kansas Missing and Unsolved tells Rocking m Media News 31-year-old Alex Head of Enterprise went missing last week on Tuesday, January 15th. Head was last seen driving a  2002 silver Dodge Durango in Chapman, possibly heading to Salina. The vehicle had a broken headlight. Anyone with any information on where Alex Head might be is asked to contact the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office at 785-263- 4041 or 785-479- 0155.

A woman was killed in crash on a highway near Garden City. According to the Kansas Highway patrol, a 2008 Honda Civic was headed north on U.S. Highway 83. The car crossed the center line and hit an oncoming 2019 Kenworth truck pulling a trailer. Following the impact the car struck a bridge guardrail. The driver of the car, 50-year-old Tuyen Nguyen, of Wichita, was killed. The crash happened Monday afternoon in Finney County about two miles south of Garden City.

Two people were killed in a two-vehicle crash in southeast Kansas. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2001 GMC Sierra pickup truck was headed west on U.S. Highway 400. For an unknown reason the truck crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2003 Dodge Ram pickup truck. Both drivers, identified as 21-year-old Joli Hutton from Mound Valley and 62-year-old Charles Wass from Parsons, were killed. The crash happened in Labette County about 2 miles east of Parsons.

A Kansas child is dead following an accidental shooting.  Police say nine-year-old Royale Spencer was with an 11-year-old boy who was playing with a gun at a mobile home in Wichita when the weapon fired.  Spencer was struck and died from his injuries.

A teenage boy accused of shooting at Kansas state troopers was taken into custody. Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents served an arrest warrant for the teen at Saint Francis Community Services in Salina  where he had been held since his release from a Kearney, Nebraska hospital. The 15-year-old  was arrested for attempted first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and booked into the Sedgwick County Juvenile Detention Facility. The teen allegedly restrained, beat and strangled a 66-year-old woman at a rural Smith County home last month before opening fire on authorities as he tried to flee on horseback. Troopers shot and wounded the teen, who was treated at a Nebraska hospital before he was arrested on Thursday

A Barton County man was arrested following a 30 minute police chase through portions of three counties  that reached speeds of 100-miles per hour. According to the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, 29-year-old Karie L. McBride of Bushton had felony warrants through Ness County and Rush County. When McBride was approached by officers in Great Bend he fled. He eventually pulled over and surrendered 2 miles west of the Barton / Rush County line.

Staff in the Pratt School District are learning about a new system to protect students against an active shooter.  Pratt school employees underwent training yesterday on the Safe Defend system.  Staff can activate the system with their fingerprints at strategically placed hubs in the school, and faculty in the main office can access a lock box containing batons and pepper spray to use against a shooter.  Once the system is activated, other school faculty, law enforcement and first responders are notified.
