LOGAN, KS — Teams from the Western Kansas Liberty League competed in the gloomy weather Thursday afternoon hoping to take home the WKLL track title. When it was all said and done, Wheatland-Grinnell girls & Northern Valley took home the gold.
It was a day long battle for the women’s title as Wheatland-Grinnell & Golden Plains duked it out all day but the Thunderhawks held on in the end just edging Golden Plains 130-125. Wheatland Grinnell had 23 placers but only won one running event in the 4×800 relay. Of the 23 placers 14 were in field events with two winning, Nicole Holaday in the discus & Anna Godek in the triple jump.
Golden Plains placed 21 athletes and really dominated the running events placing first in 4×100 & 4×400 relays and Brooke Stoll won the 800. They placed at least two girls in the top six of all but four of the running events. They also took first in the long jump thanks to Kaycee Miller.
The rest of the field finished way behind the top two. Northern Valley took 3rd, Logan 4th, Palco 5th, Cheylin 6th, Weskan 7th, Triplains 8th, Healy 9th & Brewter 10th.
As for the mens side Northern Valley dominated the field winning 10 of the 18 events and placing 26 individuals. It was an extremely close race between second and fifth. Golden Plains took second with 68 points. Wheatland-Grinnell in third with 65. Weskan took fourth with 63 points & Cheylin fifth with 60. Brewster, Triplains, Logan & Western Plains rounded out the rest of the field.
Northern Valley’s Ivan Varela had himself a day taking home four golds in the 100, 200, 400 & 4×100 relay.
All teams will be back competing next Friday at regionals in Hill City with a chance to go to state in Wichita.
