A number of crashes statewide are being blamed on icy roads. Accidents in Pawnee and Grey Counties killed one person each, with several more across Kansas sent to the hospital because of traffic crashes on slick roads.

Governor Brownback argues that Kansas legislators shouldn’t tinker with tax laws next year, claiming in an interview the state budget is in good shape despite a projected shortfall because his economic policies are working. The governor argues deep cuts in income taxes in Kansas are boosting the economy, although the state has struggled to balance its budget since then. Kansas faces a projected deficit of about $160 million for the fiscal year that begins in July.

A prosecutor says a handgun that killed the 3-year-old son of a sheriff’s deputy did not belong to the kid’s father. It appears the gun that killed the child belonged to “a friend” of someone at the apartment where that deputy was living temporarily. That boy died after finding a loaded .40-caliber Glock in a Hutchinson apartment and shooting himself with it.

It’s unclear how much money, if any, Floyd Bledsoe will get from the state now that he’s been exonerated in a murder case after 15 years behind bars. Unlike more than half of U.S. states, Kansas has no law laying out pay for lost time for the wrongly convicted. He now has to file a claim with the legislature or sue, and a representative of the Midwest Innocence Project says Bledsoe will consider all his options.

A double amputee in Wichita gets out of her home safely after waking up to find it on fire. She crawled to the front door and struggled with the locks while a neighbor called 911. She’s fine, but the home and everything in it were destroyed. Cause of the fire, not yet known.

Bringing back football – it’s one of the options on the table at Wichita State, as the school’s athletic department goes under a review. The Shockers last fielded a football team in 1986, and the concept of bringing it back was last seriously discussed in 1998. Football is the biggest source of revenue for essentially all college athletic programs.
