Wakeeney Police Chief arrested again, this time for violating bond…and other headlines: May 5, 2017

A day after the WaKeeney Police Chief was arrested and released on his own recognizance, he’s picked up again – this time for allegedly violating bond. Terry Eberle faces a number of charges including suspicion of blackmail, harassment by telecommunications device, attempted interference with law enforcement, intimidation of a witness or victim, tampering with a public record, and two counts of theft.

Legal challenges to a Kansas law requiring documents proving citizenship to vote remain on track for trial after rulings in two separate federal cases. A U.S. district judge largely denied motions seeking summary judgment in mixed rulings that nonetheless keeps both cases alive in the courts.

State lawmakers advance a proposal to keep concealed guns out of hospitals, mental health centers and nursing homes after June. A Senate committee approved a bill to give the facilities a permanent exemption from the law allowing concealed guns in public buildings that don’t have extra security. Those facilities had an exemption but it’s set to lapse at the end of June.
The KU Health System & Ardent Health Services are partnering to take over St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. It’s been on the verge of closure. The deal will preserve most of the 1600 jobs at the hospital while also providing $50 million in upgrades.
The Kansas Supreme Court is struggling with how much discretion it has to spare two brothers from execution for a series of notorious murders in Wichita following a U.S. Supreme Court decision against them. The Kansas court heard arguments in the cases of Jonathan and Reginald Carr. They were convicted of dozens of crimes in December 2000 that ended with four people being shot to death in a field.
Three teenagers now face charges in Nemaha County nearly three weeks after allegedly breaking in to Sabetha High School. Property was both broken and stolen during the break-in. All three are free on bond.
