Upland bird hunting forecast looks positive…and other headlines from the Today in Kansas Report: September 23, 2019

Surveys are complete, data is in, and the 2019 Kansas Upland Bird Hunting Forecast is ready for viewing. The highly-anticipated annual forecast predicts what pheasant, quail and prairie chicken hunters can likely expect going into the new seasons. Based on this year’s crow counts for pheasants, whistle counts for quail, and lek counts for prairie chickens, overall upland bird hunting prospects are looking “good” for fall.

A small child died after being run over by an SUV in Southwest Kansas Sunday morning. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2005 Dodge Durango was backing out of a parking area at a Garden City truck stop when it “struck and ran over a child causing injuries that would not sustain life”. The child, a one-year-old girl from Garden City, was transported to St Catherine’s Hospital where she died. The incident happened Sunday morning shortly after 11:00 at the Bosselman Travel Center at Garden City.

One person was killed in an all-terrain vehicle crash in Western Kansas over the weekend. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 44-year-old Jason Penka of Healy was riding a Suzuki four-wheeler south on a rural road. As he attempted to make a left hand the vehicle overturned an unknown number of times. Penka, who was not wearing a helmet or eye protection, was killed in the crash. The crash happened Saturday night at around 8:00 on a rural road 3.2 Miles south of K 4 Highway in Lame County.

The Kansas Supreme Court has affirmed the convictions of a Salina man serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for 25 years in connection with the 2015 shooting death of a teenager. 23-year-old Stephen Gentry was convicted for his role in the shooting death of 17-year-old Allie Saum back in May of 2015. During the trial it was revealed Gentry was the instigator in a plot to seek revenge, after being punched in a previous incident. He gathered a group of people together, ultimately misidentified a truck, and instructed another defendant to fire shots at it. Saum was a passenger in the truck, and was hit by one of five shots which were fired.

The Catholic Diocese of Wichita is naming priests who have been accused of sexually abusing minors.  The list includes the names of 15 priests including nine from the diocese.  Six other priests on the list worked in the diocese for a period of time.  KAKE reports that most of the priests on the list are deceased.

The city of Sedgwick is parting ways with the head of its police department.  The “Wichita Eagle” reports that Police Chief Larry Alexander was terminated for cause last week.  Sedgwick City Administrator Joe Turner says that he cannot give additional details about the dismissal of Alexander because it is a personnel matter, but he noted that Alexander can share details of a 64-page report that was also given to the Sedgwick City Council during an executive session.

Kansas State University is again earning national recognition as one of the top higher education institutions for diversity and inclusion. Insight Into Diversity magazine has awarded the university with the 2019 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity, or HEED, Award. K-State has received the award every year since 2014. The university is one of 94 higher education institutions selected this year for the national honor and the only Kansas institution to receive the designation.
