Update on same-sex marriage issues in Kansas

Governor Brownback’s spokeswoman says his executive order on same-sex marriage does not apply to local governments. The governor’s office responded after the head of a leading gay rights group accused the governor of an “unconstitutional power grab” by issuing an order protecting clergy, churches and religious groups that refuse to participate in same-sex weddings.
Kansas is now letting married same-sex couples jointly file their income taxes. The state’s lawyers outlined the policy change in a Thursday court filing asking a federal judge to toss a lawsuit the ACLU filed on behalf of gay and lesbian couples.
