Many of Kansas’ state universities are asking the system’s governing board this week to approve tuition increases higher than first proposed last month. KU in particular wants a tuition increase of 5 percent. That’s one percentage point higher than the school asked for in May. The state’s other universities propose tuition boosts ranging from 4.9 percent at Emporia State to 6 percent at Fort Hays State.
A judge rules that a woman charged with murder in her 7-year-old stepson’s death is mentally fit to stand trial. The Wyandotte County D-A confirmed that remains found on a property that the family was renting belonged to the boy. Police found a child’s remains in a livestock area on the property last November. Authorities haven’t confirmed reports that the kid’s remains were fed to pigs.
The latest government snapshot of Kansas crops shows a slower than usual start to the state’s wheat harvest. The National Agricultural Statistics Service reported Monday that 5 percent of the winter wheat in Kansas had now been harvested.
The current Miss Kansas says a personal experience is the inspiration behind her platform to combat texting and driving. She was a passenger in a car in June 2014, when the driver began to text, crossed the centerline and collided with another car. As a passenger, Kendall Schoenekase suffered minor injuries. She started an awareness campaign, using her position as Miss Johnson County to create public service announcements about texting and driving.
Oklahoma State and Wichita State announce a home-and-home basketball series for this season and next. The two schools have played 37 times in the past, with OSU leading the all-time series 29-8. Wichita State continues pushing for a series with KU, which Kansas head coach Bill Self has repeatedly refused to schedule.
