Ulysses toddler death being investigated…and other headlines: October 10, 2017

Law enforcement agencies are investigating the death of a 1-year-old boy from Ulysses. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says Ulysses police were called to a Ulysses home last week because a toddler was unresponsive. First responders found 13-month-old Jaxon Silva unresponsive. He was flown to a Wichita hospital, where he was declared brain dead on Friday.
Authorities say a man accused of walking into a Wichita tax office and shooting an agent called an acquaintance afterward and said he had “lost it” and “just killed a guy.” A Wichita police detective wrote in an arrest affidavit that it was one of two calls that 52-year-old Ricky Wirths made after the Sept. 19 attack on Cortney Holloway, who was shot several times but survived. Wirths, who owed nearly $400,000 in taxes, has pleaded not guilty to attempted first-degree murder.
The price of gas in Kansas falls again, reaching the lowest level since Hurricane Harvey reached Texas in late August. The average price of regular unleaded is $2.30 a gallon. That’s down four cents from a week ago and 19 cents from the first week of September. AAA Kansas pegs the highest average gas price at $2.70 in Saint Francis while Burrton and Haven tied for the low at $2.11 a gallon.
A Wichita police officer, booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on misdemeanor violence battery and theft charges. He’s been on the force for 9 years and is on administrative leave, with pay. The case is being investigated by the sheriff’s office in Sedgwick County.
There are now charges against a man with a prior drug conviction who was allegedly caught with $8-thousand worth of meth. He was pulled over in Great Bend on a traffic infraction and that’s when the officer noticed nearly half a pound of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. He’s being held on $300-thousand bond.
