Two injured during inmate disturbance at Norton prison…and other headlines: September 6, 2017

State corrections officials call it a ‘situation’, while the state’s biggest employees union calls it a ‘riot’ that happened last night at the prison in Norton. Two staffers have minor injuries and it took about three hours to get all the inmates back in their cells. At one point the Norton County sheriff used the reverse 911 system to text people, telling them to have their homes and vehicles locked.
The father of a boy whose dead body was found encased in concrete says officials received at least four reports of abuse against the child while he was in his mother’s custody. A petition filed in May by the boy’s father Carlo Brewer says four abuse reports were made dating as far back as July 2016 and as recently as April 2017. One allegation references an injury to his nose with filthy and inappropriate clothing.
Tyson Foods plans to invest $320 million in a new chicken-processing plant in northeastern Kansas that will employ 1,600 people. The Springdale, Arkansas-based meat producer announced its plans Tuesday during a news conference with state and local officials in Tonganoxie. Tyson plans to build the plant outside the town of 5,300 people west of Kansas City. The new plant is expected to open in mid-2019.
Cleanup and repairs are being done in preparation for the Kansas State Fair after a number of 13-year olds used knives to slash tents, sprayed paint on portable buildings on disply, and dumped stain on hot tubs in a vendor booth. They’d also allegedly stolen a truck before that. The teens were arrested and the vandalism is a felony because of the dollar amount of the damage done.
Hurricane Harvey and now, Irma and Jose behind it are behind a 26 cent rise in the price of gas in Kansas over the past week. AAA Kansas put the statewide average at $2.49 a gallon for regular unleaded, still well below the nationwide average of $2.65. The cheapest gas in the state came in Waverly while Peabody had the highest. The least expensive gas in the nation right now is in Arizona.
