Two Area Teams & Six Individuals Qualify For State Golf

Ross VolkmerMay 14, 2019

It turned out to be a beautiful day to try and qualify for boys state golf on Monday and two teams from the Northwest Kansas area and six individual golfers earned a spot at their respected state tournament coming up next week.

In order to qualify in 3A you have to be a part of the top two teams or shoot one of the five best scores as an individual. In 2A & 1A it was the top three teams that qualified and then whoever had the next five best individual rounds.

At the 3A regional in Goodland, the Goodland Cowboys golf team shot a 342 as team to place second behind regional champion Phillipsburg who shot a team score of 331. Goodland’s Garin Ihrig shot the individual low round of 72 to place first and Ryan Lalicker shot an 83 to place fifth as GHS’s only two medal winners on the day. But because the Cowboys as a team placed in the top two of the final standings all six golfers will play at the state tournament at Emporia on Monday. Only one other area golfer qualified for the state tourney and that was Colby’s Carter Stanley who placed seventh with an 85.

No area teams qualified at the 2A regional at Ellis on Monday. Salina Sacred Heart dominated the field finishing in first with a team score of 299.  Teams from Plainville & Trego each shot 334 to qualify each of their teams for state at Hesston. Three area golfers qualified as individuals: Hoxie’s Jarrod Dible & Dylan Weimer. Dible placed sixth with 79 and Weimer shot an 84 to tie for 14th and qualify. Also making the cut was Decatur Community’s Spencer Wishon who also shot an 84.

And at the 1A golf regional in Grainfield the Rawlins County Buffalo’s qualified for state as team placing second with a 326. Osborne was your regional champ with a score of 310. Buffalo’s top golfer was Kendrick Wood who placed second with a 70. Other area qualifiers included Jose Chavez of Greeley County who shot a 74 to place fourth as well as Wallace County’s Andrew Noone who just made the cut shooting 80 and placing 12th. 1A state golf will take place at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

All state golf tourney’s are set to take place Monday.
