COLBY, Kan. — Colby Community College rolled to a straight-sets victory over Independence Community College last night at the Community Building.
The Trojans took control of the match early with a 25-17 first set win over the Pirates.
Freshman Right Side Hitter Macarena Ruiz (Misiones, Argentina) led all Trojans with 13 kills in the match, as well as three service aces.
Behind Ruiz’s strong offensive effort, Colby took the second set with relative ease, 25-16.
Sophomore Setter Kyndal Bacon (Newton, KS) helped boost the Trojan offense with 30 assists in the match, adding yet another strong effort to her resume after recently being named the KJCCC Setter of the Week for the second time this season.
Defensively, the Trojans saw a strong effort from two individuals that shared a heavy workload. Sophomore Defensive Specialist Elaine Thibadeau (Monument, CO) tallied a team-leading 14 digs, while Junior Outside Hitter Karleeann Ramos (Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico) was close behind with 11 digs as well.
In the third set, Independence showed resilience, forcing the tightest set of the match, but a late run by Colby proved to be too much to overcome. The Trojans took the final set 25-20 to clinch the match.
Head Coach Carey Jones has her team moving in the right direction as the Trojans improved to 10-1 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.
Colby CC will be back in action on Saturday afternoon in a road contest with Pratt Community College. The Beavers will enter the match at 4-9 overall and 1-2 in KJCCC play after a 3-2 loss at home to Hutchinson Community College last night.
The Trojans will be back in the friendly confines of the Colby Community Building next Wednesday, September 18th at 6:30pm.
