About 50 University of Kansas students are being screened for tuberculosis. University health officials say they had contact with a student who contracted the lung disease in his home country outside the U.S. No other students are showing symptoms but they’ll be screened again in eight weeks.
More than half of the Republicans in the Kansas Senate are asking President Susan Wagle to reinstate the former chairwoman of the chamber’s health committee. The letter circulated Tuesday and the senators signing it included Majority Leader Terry Bruce. The Associated Press obtained a copy signed by 17 of the 32 GOP senators.
There are questions about why three students in Great Bend were handcuffed during a protest surrounding a student’s alleged sexual assault on a school bus. They’d marched to the district office and then sat down in front of the door, demanding answers about punishment for the people involved in the case. In a statement, school administrators said they didn’t believe the alleged sexual assault actually involved criminal conduct, which didn’t sit well with protestors or the victim’s family.
Kansas police officers could help officers across state lines during emergencies under a bill approved by a House committee. Most officers in Kansas now are only able to help other departments in the state, though officers in border counties are allowed to provide assistance across state lines during drug investigations or in cases of terrorism.
A top administrator at Kansas State University is a finalist for chancellor at the University of Nebraska. April Mason is currently provost and senior vice president at Kansas State. Nebraska officials announced four finalists Tuesday following a national search.
An Andover teenager is donating shoes to the needy after getting some help collecting them from Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. The 17-year-old is handing out 300 pairs of Adidas shoes to Wichita middle school students. The efforts exploded in December when the reality star tweeted that she and West would donate 1,000 pairs of shoes.
