To get an idea of how Kansans are handling the difficult traveling conditions associated with the winter storm, we received the following update from AAA Kansas:
“As of 3 p.m. this afternoon, AAA Kansas reports 173 calls for emergency road service… 43 of those calls in Topeka, 42 in Wichita, 25 in the Lawrence area, and 63 calls elsewhere in Kansas. The public has responded to warnings exceedingly well so far to stay off the roads. Nearly 40 percent of all the calls are for winch-outs, in situations where cars have skidded off the roadway and into snow drifts or stuck in high snow. About a third of all the calls have required towing, the remainder for frozen locks, lockouts or battery and tire issues.
We anticipate heavier call volume this evening as those who are traveling home from work encounter problems on side streets. We encourage motorists to be cognizant of high snow and take precautions to avoid getting stuck on unplowed roadways.”
