State Representative Patsy Terrell of Hutchinson has died. Her body was found in her hotel room near the Capitol. The cause is unclear. Terrell won her House seat just this past November. Patsy Terrell was 55.
2,000 sows and thousands of piglets are dead in a fire at Husky Hogs in Phillips County. Foul play is not suspected in the fire, which is being investigated. The head of the company says he does intend to rebuild.
Governor Brownback says the income tax increases legislators enacted over his veto will be bad for the long-term health of the state’s economy. The governor says he believes the increases will slow job growth and discourage companies from moving to Kansas. Legislators repudiated past income tax cuts championed by Brownback in passing a measure that is expected to raise $1.2 billion over two years. That would cover the nearly $900 million projected deficit in that time.
He fled Kansas three years ago before being sentenced on a child rape charge. Now a man from Sumner County has been captured in Mexico. He’s being held in Texas, awaiting extradition. That man was last seen in May 2014, a month after his second conviction for raping an 11-year old in 2008.
Kansas will require abortion providers to give women information about their doctors’ histories and provide it on white paper in 12-point Times New Roman type. Governor Brownback signed that into law while flanked by other abortion opponents. The law takes effect July 1 and will require a doctor’s credentials, malpractice insurance, hospital privileges and disciplinary record. Opponents argue it amounts to harassment.
