State closing juvenile facility in Larned…and other headlines: July 8, 2016

The state is closing the juvenile correctional facility at Larned over the next 12 months. The Department of Corrections announced the plans, pointing to a 30 percent drop in inmates since 2010. An agency official claims workers there will be given the chance to keep working for the state in other roles.
Fort Riley officials say a soldier stationed at the fort has been found dead. Fort officials announced the body of that 26-year old from San Francisco, was found last Friday, a week after he went missing. The details surrounding his disappearance and death have not been released. An investigation is continuing.
A Kansas judge says the reason that abortion provider George Tiller was killed is not a legal defense for murder, but could be relevant for jurors in deciding how long his convicted killer Scott Roeder must stay in prison. The Sedgwick County District Judge said Roeder’s state of mind during the killing from 2009 could matter to a jury that’ll decide whether to resentence him to a minimum of 50 or 25 years before being eligible for parole.
Lawrence police investigate after an injured 9-month-old girl was found abandoned in the trash. The child was taken to a hospital in Kansas City in serious but stable condition. The child was found yesterday morning in the dumpster at an apartment complex.
It’s believed to be a murder-suicide that left a man and his former girlfriend dead in Wichita. Officers believe she’d gone to his apartment to return some things following their breakup when the two started arguing, he shot her and then turned the gun on himself.
