Another Kansas state lawmaker has become the third Republican to enter the race to succeed retiring GOP U.S. Rep. Lynn Jenkins. Rep. Kevin Jones of Wellsville announced his candidacy yesterday for the 2nd Congressional District seat held by Lynn Jenkins, who is not running for re-election. Jones has been in the Kansas House since 2013.
There’s a new wrinkle to the ongoing controversy in the suspension of the police chief in Great Bend. City administrator and acting police chief Howard Partington abruptly announced his retirement yesterday, effective immediately. In a statement he blames his opponents for the decision. Police Chief Cliff Couch was suspended for “unethical and dishonest conduct”. He claims that was the response when he raised concerns about the department being overworked.
Kansas officials say the Osawatomie state mental hospital has passed an inspection, moving it closer to regaining federal certification. THe facility has been plagued by years of neglect and staffing shortages. The Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services secretary Tim Keck said the agency has been “waiting for this for a long time.”
An indictment accuses a man in KCK of using his company cell phone to make child porn. His former employers called the FBI after he was fired and turned in his phone. He faces at least 15 years in prison on each of the two charges.

It’s believed a lightning strike is behind a fire at an oil storage tank northeast of Salina. Nobody was hurt, although crews determined there wasn’t much they could do besides let the fire burn itself out. That took about 3 hours.
