A teacher at West Elementary in Goodland is one of six finalists for Kansas Teacher Of The Year. Nona Mason gets a $2,000 cash award for making it this far, and is in the running for the top award. That’ll be announced in November.
The professor, shot and killed on campus at Delta State University in Mississippi yesterday was from Kansas. Ethan Schmidt taught history there, and studied at Emporia State and KU after being raised in Marion County. The suspect in the shooting taught at that same college in Mississippi.
An investigation is underway into the death of an inmate at the Hutchinson Correctional Facility. The whole thing started with two inmates fighting, and one of them was taken to solitary. He reportedly became combative with officers, then collapsed and became unresponsive. He later died. The KBI is looking into exactly what happened.
The last of four people charged with shooting a couple in Valley Center to death two years ago pleads guilty. He struck a deal with prosecutors to turn state’s evidence against his friend, who’d been adopted by the two victims. Sentencing is next month.
The initial court appearance is in the books for a Beloit man who’s accused of trespassing in a home in Hutchinson. A woman found him inside, ran to her bedroom where her husband was asleep, and the husband told prosecutors he woke up and began struggling with that man as he tried to choke his wife. In court, that man said he went into the home to hide because he thought he was being chased and would be killed.
Law enforcement officers across Kansas plan to step up patrols this week, targeting child car safety. It’s part of National Child Passenger Safety Week, with a push on making sure kids are properly buckled in and using the correct car or booster seat, if need be.
