Senator Dole returns home after 3 week stint in the hospital…and other headlines: October 11, 2017

Former Republican presidential candidate and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole is back home after being hospitalized for three weeks with low blood pressure. The 94-year-old former Kansas senator was discharged from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center outside Washington, D.C. He was hospitalized Sept. 13. Dole tweeted that he’s “happy to be home.”
A 25-year-old Topeka man with little political experience is joining a crowded field of candidates seeking the Republican nomination for Kansas’ 2nd Congressional District. Matt Bevens announced his candidacy, saying he was a political outsider who would serve only three terms if elected. Bevens’ only political experience is an unsuccessful bid for the Topeka City Council. He is an energy trader for Westar Energy.
Parts of central Kansas feel a minor earthquake. The magnitude 2.5 quake hit just before 3:30 yesterday afternoon, centered about 19 miles southeast of Salina. It’s the second earthquake in Kansas in 3 days. No reports of damage or anybody hurt.
Kansas State officials say an anti-gay slur was found outside the university’s student union, the latest in several vandalism incidents targeting diversity at the school. Campus police are investigating. Last month white supremacist fliers were found on campus, while a noose was found hanging from a tree in May.
A lawsuit claims a boy sexually assaulted a girl at a middle school in Overland Park after district officials failed to tell law enforcement about prior assault claims against that boy. The suit claims his school records contain reports from three other girls about similar assaults but authorities were never told. Several current and former Shawnee Mission School District officials are named as defendants. No comment yet from the district.
