The Kansas Senate’s top Republican is calling on GOP Gov. Sam Brownback to give corrections officers at state prisons an immediate pay increase. Senate President Susan Wagle issued a statement urging Brownback to take executive action after she toured the El Dorado Correctional Facility. The prison has faced staffing shortages and has seen multiple inmate disturbances in recent months.
An inmate who got away from the Winfield Correctional Facility is back in custody. He’d been on the run for approximately a day before being caught. No word on how that man was found.
Lieutenant Governor Jeff Colyer confirms he will seek a full four-year term in the governor’s mansion. He’ll be taking over the office when Governor Brownback leaves for an ambassadorship in the Trump administration. Colyer joins six other candidates in the race for the Republican nomination, including Secretary of State Kris Kobach and Ken Selzer, Kansas Insurance Commissioner.
If a Kansas man had been convicted at trial of felony theft, one of his jurors might have been none other than the top official on the judicial panel that ultimately could have reviewed his appeal. Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Lawton Nuss reported for jury duty Tuesday, but didn’t have to sit on the jury because the defendant pleaded guilty.
Southern Kansas shakes again. A magnitude 3.7 quake, centered about 7 miles north of Caldwell, struck just after 4 yesterday afternoon. There are no reports of damage or injuries. That quake is the strongest this month, and follows a half-dozen earthquakes near the Oklahoma line late last week.
