Second-Half Woes Doom Eagles, Lady Eagles in Norton

Dan LuceroFebruary 2, 2021

The Colby Eagles and Lady Eagles both played first halves to be proud of and second halves to forget on Tuesday night in Norton.

Colby’s girls fell to the Lady Bluejays 51-30, while the Colby boys were beaten by a 65-45 score.

The girls game was an even affair for the first 16 minutes. A Mackenzie Dodson three capped a 6-0 first quarter run that gave Colby an early 8-7 advantage, but Norton took a 9-8 lead by the end of the first. The lead changed hands eight times in the second quarter, and the game was tied at 19 at the intermission. But the second half was all Norton. After a quick Colby basket to take a 21-19 lead, the Lady Bluejays went on a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. Colby hung tough late into the third quarter, down just one at 29-28 after a Kennedy Stanley layup, but Norton ended the third on an 8-0 run and extended the run to 14-0 with the first six points of the fourth quarter. The Lady Eagles mustered just two points in the final quarter and were outscored 32-11 in the second half.

Stanley’s 11 points made her the only Lady Eagle in double figures, as Colby matched their lowest team scoring output of the season. Tessa Hauser poured in 19 points to lead the way for Norton, and the senior eclipsed the 1000-point mark for her career in the process.

Hear the postgame comments from Lady Eagles head coach Tom Stephens:

The boys game followed a similar blueprint as the girls game. There were five lead changes in the first quarter before Norton snatched the lead with an 8-0 burst to end the quarter ahead 16-9. The Bluejays pushed the lead to as many as nine points in the second quarter, but Colby rallied back with a 7-0 run to regain the lead 27-26 on a Hunter Vaughn layup. Norton responded with a three-pointer to take the lead back at 29-27 at the half, and they would open the third quarter on a 10-0 run as Colby turned the ball over four times on their first five possessions. Colby got no closer than nine points the rest of the way, as they were outscored 19-5 in the third quarter and trailed by as many as 23 in the final frame.

Only three Eagles scored in the loss, and all were in double-figures: Peyton Wahlmeier scored 19 points, Ryan Myers chipped in 15, and Hunter Vaughn added 11. Ryan Schrum’s 19 points paced Norton.

Hear the postgame comments from Eagles head coach Parker McKee:

The Lady Eagles saw their three game winning streak snapped and fell to 8-6 with the loss. The Eagle boys losing streak reached four as they dropped to 6-8. Norton’s girls are now 11-4 and their boys are 10-4.

Colby is back on the road Friday night for GWAC play against Hugoton. Hugoton’s girls are ranked third in class 3A by the KBCA.
