Search continues in northern Kansas for accused murderer…and other headlines: September 8, 2017

The search continues in northern Kansas for a man accused of murder. Searches in Belleville, Scandia, and Concordia yesterday turned up empty. Schools and businesses were locked down for part of the afternoon but those were lifted when the searches turned up nothing.
The National Agricultural Statistics Service and Kansas Grain Inspection Service show a big dip in protein levels for this year’s winter wheat crop in the state. The average for this year came in at 11.6 percent, well off the 10-year average of 12.5. It’s also off slightly from last year’s 11.7 percent. Roughly two-thirds of this year’s winter wheat crop got the highest rating, number one.
No reports of damage or injury following an earthquake in Harper County Thursday afternoon. The magnitude 2.5 quake was centered about 17 miles northwest of Harper. This is the second earthquake in Kansas in the past week, following a 2.3 quake in Sedgwick County back on the 2nd.
A car crash in McPherson County leaves a woman from Scott City dead. A 16-year old ran a stop sign, hitting that woman’s car. The collision sent that vehicle through a fence and rolling onto its top. Both drivers had seat belts on at the time.
It’ll be 2067 before a man from Wichita is eligible for parole after being convicted of murdering an elderly man who was showing him a rental property. His sentence is life without parole for 50 years, making him 78 by the time of his first parole hearing. That man’s co defendant is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on the 20th.
