Search continues for rape suspect after he was spotted in NW Kansas Sunday…and other headlines from the Today in Kansas Report: February 4, 2019

Students at Fort Hays State University were on alert after receiving notification of an alleged early morning rape near campus. A search today continues for the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Tre Miekale Carrasco, who is believed to have fled Hays. His image was caught by a security camera  several hours after the crime at a gas station in Colby. Carrasco had been released from prison on Friday in Ellis County.  He had been serving time in prison for crimes that include aggravated battery and aggravated sexual battery.


Authorities are investigating after a father and his son were found shot to death on a farm property near the western Kansas community of Rexford. Deputies responding to the property in rural Rawlins County, near the Thomas County line near Rexford, Kansas. found 74-year-old Gary E. Withers deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. Soon after, approximately one half mile away, and outside the home on the property belonging to Gary Withers, deputies discovered 41-year-old Daniel “Danny” E. Withers deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. An investigation is ongoing.


Kansas police are investigating after a child was shot.  A four-year-old girl was shot Saturday night at a home in the Kansas City area. The child was taken to a hospital in critical condition .


Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against the man accused of killing two Kansas sheriff  deputies.  Thirty-year-old Antoine Fielder is charged with capital murder in the deaths of deputies Patrick Rohrer and Theresa King.  The deputies were transporting Fielder to court for a hearing last June when they were shot and killed in the parking lot of the gated transport office in Wyandotte County.


Police in Kansas say a man who went for a run Friday night and never returned home was found dead. Basehor police say Jordan Kenne was found dead in Leavenworth County. The cause of his death is still under investigation. Authorities were searching for the missing man after he was last seen leaving his home to go for a run around 5 p.m. Friday.


Authorities are identifying four people who were killed in a Riley County house fire.  The blaze broke out Thursday morning in the 200 block of Riley Avenue in Ogden.  Seventy-two-year-old Roger Harris Senior, 72-year-old Rea Harris, 50-year-old Roger Harris Junior and 55-year-old Rocky Newell all died from smoke inhalation. Careless smoking is suspected as a possible cause of the fire.


A Garden City man was killed in a single vehicle crash. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 55-year-old Mark Goodwin was driving a pickup truck headed south on Old 83 Highway in Finney County. He realized he was in the wrong lane and veered to the right. The truck tipped onto its driver side and rolled 3  1/4 times.


Part of a Kansas prison was on lockdown over the weekend and visitations were cancelled after a series of fights involving multiple inmates. Authorities say there were several fights at the Hutchinson Correction Facility involving two or three maximum security inmates at a time. Another fight involving five medium-security inmates occurred Saturday morning. Inmates made several homemade stabbing devices to use during the fight. No one involved suffered life threatening injuries and no guards were hurt.


A Kansas urban baseball league was targeted by thieves.  League 42 officials say a series of thefts this year has taken place at a storage building in Wichita. Nearly 200 bats, stereo speakers and sound system speakers have been stolen.  League officials are accepting donations to replace the stolen equipment.
