SCOTT CITY, KS — For two weeks the Goodland Cowgirl softball team was look for a win and finally found a pair on Tuesday afternoon sweeping the Beavers of Scott City; 12-6 in game one & 19-7 in game two, in five innings.
In game one Goodland got ahead and stayed ahead thanks to great run support from its offense. After a very fast first inning Goodland would go on to score at least one run in every inning the rest of the game. The middle of the Cowgirl lineup (Brooke Livengood, Anna Gutierrez & Kaitlyn Frazier) did a great job powering the Cowgirl offense going a combined 6 of 13 with seven runs and three RBI’s. Jessi Duell also scored twice while Atalee Amthor drove in a team two runs. GHS was also held out Scott City pitching which allowed 11 free passes. Livengood also got in down in the circle allowing just six runs, while striking out 5 in a complete game eight-hitter to get the win. Scott City was led by Gabby Martinez who went 3-3 with two runs scored and two RBI’s including a shot blast over the center field wall.
The run scoring fiesta continued into game number two as Goodland scored at least one run in each of the first four innings. Highlighted by a six run second and an eight run fourth. Jessi Duell went 2-5 with two runs and an RBI. Taighe Weeter drove in three while also scoring three times herself. But the really star was Anna Gutierrez, who helped her own cause going 3-5 with a game high four RBI’s. She also got the win in the circle needing just 27 pitches to get through three innings allowing just three runs. Scott City’s Ella Rumford went 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBI’s but took the loss allowing seven runs and walking six Goodland batters.
The wins ended Goodland’s losing streak at five games and improved them to 4-8 on the year and 4-4 in the GWAC. Scott City, who came into the series winners of six in a row, dropped to 7-9 overall and also 4-4 in GWAC play.
