Proposed raise for state employees being considered by lawmakers…and other headlines: March 21, 2017

State legislators are advancing a proposal to give most state employees a 2 percent pay raise even as they wrestle with serious budget problems that are likely to force a big tax increase. The Senate Ways and Means Committee voted to include the raise in its proposed spending blueprint for the fiscal year beginning in July.
A huge fire at an apartment building under construction in Overland Park touches off fires on several homes blocks away. The fire at a building at the multimillion-dollar City Place development blew plumes of smoke and embers along rows of homes nearby. 17 houses were damaged, some of them destroyed.
The court-appointed attorneys for a man accused of plotting to bomb an apartment complex in Garden City filled with Somali immigrants want out of the case. The filing from attorneys for one of three men facing charges comes in the wake of an arraignment last week on a revised indictment. The attorneys claim they have lost their client’s trust and cannot satisfy his expectations.
Two people, arrested and police look for a third after a weekend shoplifting spree in Salina. Investigators claim they were found with a car full of stolen merchandise, and claim the suspects distracted the greeter at a Walmart while sneaking out with two TV’s and two computers.
Nearly 20 years in prison is the sentence for a man in Lyons County who admitted in court to having sex with a child. He took a plea deal in the case in November.
