The Oakley teenager who was thrown out of a pickup when it rolled four times this week did not have his seatbelt on, according to the KHP. 15-year old Rocky Racette was on Thomas County Road C at the time, and was taken to a hospital in Wichita for treatment.
Governor Brownback is embracing a $38 million increase in state aid for poor Kansas school districts ahead of a special session of the Legislature. The governor issued a proclamation yesterday calling lawmakers back to the Statehouse two weeks from today to respond to a state Supreme Court order last month on education funding. He said he’s looking for legislators to provide the extra dollars to poor districts.
A state official says the Kansas Legislature’s special session on education funding will cost at least $43,000 a day. The Legislative Administrative Services Director claims lawmakers’ salaries and expense payments will be most of the cost, and the Legislature would operate with a skeletal staff. The special session is an effort to avert a June 30th shutdown of the state’s schools for lack of equitable funding.
A war of words erupts over a Kansas military base’s decision to disinvite a highly decorated retired officer from a prayer breakfast because of complaints about his views on transgender bathrooms and Muslims. Retired Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin had been scheduled to speak Monday as part of the 1st Infantry Division’s “Victory Week.”
The body found in a creek in Wichita is confirmed to be the 11-year old boy who was swept away by high waters late last month. Crews had been looking for him since May 27th when he fell into the water from heavy rains and didn’t come back up.
The Garden City man accused of holding a judge hostage has bond set at $1.3 million. A complaint charges that man with one count of terrorism and, he could face up to seven more counts including kidnapping and making a criminal threat. That man is scheduled to appear next Wednesday in Finney County District Court.
