A man from Nebraska is dead after a collision with a big rig in Decatur County. He was just west of Dresden on K-383 when he crossed the center line in his Honda Accord and collided head-on with the semi. The driver of the big rig wasn’t hurt.
Governor Brownback signs a disaster declaration for severe weather this month in Kansas. Barber, Douglas, Franklin, Greenwood, Johnson, Miami, Seward & Trego are all the counties listed so far although more counties may be added.
Authorities work to identify skeletal remains that were found this weekend at Melvern Lake in eastern Kansas. A park ranger with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers found the remains Friday night at the lake, which is northeast of Emporia.
A move in Kansas to increase pay for corrections officers in prisons is building pressure on legislators to consider raises for all government workers. But lawmakers would have to figure out how to pay for the raises even after a significant tax increase this year. Budget director Shawn Sullivan told lawmakers revenues must grow more quickly to sustain the spending lawmakers already have approved.
Federal officials are investigating the death of an inmate at the Lansing Correctional Facility. A Kansas Department of Corrections spokesman says that 56-year-old James Beeson died March 26 under circumstances that were “out of the ordinary.” No further details, including how Beeson died, were provided. Beeson had eight convictions since December of 1998 for a variety of child sex crimes in Osage County. No word why the death was kept under wraps until now.
