National Showdown to be televised this spring

Jewel will host the 31st Annual Texaco Country Showdown National Finals

Texaco Country Showdown, America’s largest country music talent search and country radio promotion, returns to Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium on Thursday, January 17th. Acclaimed singer, songwriter, actress, poet, painter and philanthropist, Jewel, will host and perform at the one-hour television taping where 5 contestants will compete for the national title.

The Texaco Country Showdown is a year-long talent competition that begins each spring with over 450 live shows produced by country music radio stations. KXXX-AM hosted the local competition on July 31st in Colby, and KWGB-FM hosted the Kansas State Competition on August 1st in Goodland. Local winners advance to State and Regional Showdowns held at major entertainment venues where the field is narrowed to five National Finalists. This year’s National Finalists will compete for $100,000 and the title, “Best New Act in Country Music.”

The five contestants performing on the show with Jewel represent five regional areas: Kate and Corey are from the Northeast region. The duo use acoustic guitars and have distinct voices making up a unique sound. Kate Shaffer and Corey Coleman are sponsored by WQRS in Olean, New York.

The Brothers Roberson, from the Midwest region, follow their family’s musical tradition. Rhett and Brendan Roberson’s diverse talents bring the attitude back to country music. They are sponsored by KCLQ in Lebanon, MO.

Deidre Thornell is from the Southeast, region. This singer/songwriter from Texas is barely 20 years old, with bountiful long red hair and a four octave range. She is sponsored by KPXI in Henderson, TX.

Husband and wife duo, Kassie and Ben are from the Southwest region. The inspiration of artists such as Adele and Miranda Lambert help create the couple’s original art. Kassie & Ben Wilson are sponsored by WKUL in Cullman, AL.

Poor Man’s Poison are from the West region. They play original acoustic music on bluegrass instruments and their sound is influenced by both folk and reggae. The talented band members are Ryan Hakker, Dustin Medeiros, Mike Jacobs and Tommy McCarthy. They are sponsored by KHTS in Santa Clarita, CA.
