Around 10 am mountain time, a truck and a sedan were traveling eastbound and reportedly touched in a construction zone about 15 miles from the Kansas-Colorado border, sending both cars into oncoming traffic.
The driver of the truck managed to serve back across the lanes avoiding serious damage, but on-site personnel said the sedan, driven by an elderly couple, struck a westbound vehicle head-on. Four of the five cars involved came to a rest in the eastbound ditch.
Multiple drivers were taken to the hospital. Authorities said the elderly couple was responsive when emergency crews arrived, and believe no one sustained fatal injuries.
Authorities are redirecting traffic off of westbound I-70 from state highway 17 through Ruleton to SH-14 via SH-67. Updates will be announced as more information from the Kansas Highway Patrol is released.
