More small earthquakes rattle south central Kansas…and other headlines: September 27, 2017

Parts of Kansas feel their second earthquake of the week. The magnitude 2.6 quake yesterday afternoon was centered five miles northeast of Harper, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The day before, a 2.5 quake struck 13 miles northwest of Harper. No reports of damage or injuries from either quake.
Many schools in the state are changing classes in the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s football classification list for next year and 2019. Member schools voted to eliminate the two-division format in 4A, instead putting one division at that level and resurrecting 1A football.
Arson and animal cruelty charges are now in effect against a man in Salina accused of trying to burn down the rental property he’d been evicted from while his dog was still inside. Prosecutors claim he told crews he started the fire to kill himself and burn the place down. The fire did about $5200 damage before crews put it out.
A Topeka high school student was arrested after reportedly making social media threats against the school. The student at Seaman High School was arrested Monday night. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports the threat was sent via Snapchat and contained a reference to Columbine, the infamous 1999 high school shooting in Colorado that left 15 people dead and more than 20 injured.
A former Chapman basketball coach has been sentenced to more than five years in prison on two counts of sexual exploitation of a child. Mark Snider of Abilene, who was sentenced Friday, will be on lifetime supervision after release from prison. Snider was the basketball and track coach for the Chapman School District. He was arrested last year.
