Thomas County officials and the public finance law firm Gilmore & Bell, PC are holding a meeting this evening on proposed judicial center for the county. They’ll cover financing for the plan, as well as lay out concerns with the existing facility. The meeting is at 6 in the Frahm Theatre at Colby Community College.
Another day of dangerously hot weather is on tap for Kansas. The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for parts of the Sunflower State and six other states. Some cities have opened cooling centers over the past couple days.
A Lyon County sheriff’s deputy, convicted of vehicular manslaughter for a crash in 2012 that left a man from Madison dead. Deputy Tyler Pettigrew initially was charged with involuntary manslaughter, aggravated battery and using a wireless device to write, send or receive a written communication while driving.
A suspended Kansas sheriff’s detective who is charged with three counts of felony perjury worked on more than 600 cases, according to prosecutors. The Shawnee County District Attorney’s Office has found that the cases Erin Thompson handled ran the gamut – from traffic infractions to homicide.
Health care analysts claim Governor Brownback’s plan to cut money for Medicaid will compound problems at hospitals. The 4-percent cut in Medicaid reimbursements kicks in July 1st, and is part of a plan to balance the state’s budget. Health care providers already claimed not expanding the program was hurting them.
A $3.5 million gift from a KU alum and her deceased husband will be split evenly between the university’s law school and Kansas Athletics. The donation provides an unrestricted $1.75 million to the law school while also adding the same amount to the Winter Family Scholarship Fund for Kansas Athletics.
