Modest sales tax increases could be the most popular option for filling a huge hole in the Kansas budget. That’s according to an informal poll of GOP House members. About half of them support raising the state sales tax to 6.5 percent from 6.15 percent. The state’s facing a shortfall of more than $400 million.
Kansas legislators have approved a $131 million budget for the state court system. It increases total spending on the courts by nearly $2.5 million. The budget is still $18 million shy of what the state Supreme Court requested.
The Kansas House has passed a bill limited the legal rights of offenders in the state’s sexual predator program. One change would eliminate the right of confined offenders to request a jury trial when petitioning for release. The House sent the bill to the Senate on a vote of 111-0.
