Lady Eagles Win Orange & Black Third Place Game; Eagle Boys Toppled in Title Game

Dan LuceroJanuary 23, 2021

Both the Colby Eagles and Lady Eagles earned podium finishes at the 36th Annual Orange & Black Classic in Colby this weekend. The Lady Eagles wrapped up their week with a 54-27 trouncing of Ulysses in the third place game, while the Colby boys’ bid for their first ever Orange & Black championship fell short in a 56-47 loss to Hays.

The Lady Eagles left no doubt about the third place contest, sprinting out to a 9-0 lead and never looking back. They would lead 18-3 after one quarter and 38-13 at halftime. Colby started the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run that enacted the mercy clock for the game’s final stages, and led by as many as 33 on their way to their second win over Ulysses in the last eight days.

Emma Curry was the lone Lady Eagle in double figures as she poured in a season-high 21 points. Kennedy Stanley added nine points for Colby, and Mackenzie Dodson scored eight. Halle Nagel’s nine points led Ulysses.

Hear the postgame comments from Lady Eagles head coach Tom Stephens:

Colby improves to 6-5 with the victory while Ulysses drops to 2-9. For the Lady Eagles, Brooklyn Jones, Kennedy Stanley, and Mackenzie Dodson were named to the All-Tournament team. Stanley also earned Academic All-Tournament honors and also earned the Gary Garrett Sportsmanship Award. Lady Eagles coach Tom Stephens was given the Tom Bowen Coach’s Award, and Jones and Dodson teamed up to win the tournament’s Super Shot contest.

In the boys championship, Hays dug a deep hole for the Eagles early, racing out to a 10-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter with Colby down 18-8 after one. Colby got within nine points on two separate occasions in the second quarter, but Hays went on a 12-2 run and pushed the lead out to 35-19 at the break. Colby found the three-point range in the third quarter, with Hunter Vaughn beating the buzzer from just inside half-court to keep the Eagles within 47-34, but Colby just couldn’t muster a run against the top-ranked team in Class 5A, and Hays claimed the victory and their third ever Orange & Black championship, dropping Colby to 0-4 all time in tournament finals.

Vaughn scored 19 points, a new season-high, to lead Colby, and Peyton Wahlmeier joined him in double-figures with 13 points. Carson Kieffer’s 14 points led the way for Hays.

Hear the postgame remarks from Eagles head coach Parker McKee:

Colby falls to 6-5 with the defeat while Hays improves to 11-0 and moves their winning streak to 19 games. Colby had three players honored on the All-Tournament team: Ryan Myers, Peyton Wahlmeier, and Hunter Vaughn. Jaren Rush was named to the Academic All-Tournament team.

The Eagles and Lady Eagles are back in action against GWAC rival Holcomb this coming Friday night at the Community Building.
