Lady Eagles Score OT Win, Eagle Boys Misfire Against Holcomb

Dan LuceroJanuary 29, 2021

The second half of the 2020-21 regular season for the Colby Eagles and Lady Eagles began with non-league contests against Holcomb at the Community Building on Friday night. The Lady Eagles shook off a slow start and outlasted the Lady Longhorns 53-49 in overtime, while the Eagle boys struggled to find their scoring touch in a 45-34 loss.

The girls game saw Holcomb take an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter on a McKee Blackburn three that beat the buzzer. The Lady Longhorns would lead by as many as 10 in the first half and take a 21-12 advantage into the locker room against the stunned Lady Eagles. But Colby had a response to start the third quarter, going on a 9-0 run to tie the score and starting a sequence that would include seven lead changes and five ties the rest of the game. Colby led by six with under three minutes left, but Holcomb hung tough and got a three from Jera Kruleski with three seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 47 and send it to overtime. The Lady Longhorns snatched the early lead in the extra session, but Colby regained the advantage on a Kennedy Stanley lay-up with less than a minute left. After a Brooklyn Jones block on the defensive end, Briana Barnett stuck the dagger in with a corner three with thirty seconds to play that gave the Lady Eagles the four-point margin that would last until the final buzzer.

Jones’ 20 points led Colby in the win, and Emma Curry and Kennedy Stanley joined her in double-figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Kruleski scored 17 to lead the Lady Longhorns.

Hear the postgame comments from Lady Eagles head coach Tom Stephens:

Peyton Wahlmeier scored six early points to help the Eagle boys to a first quarter lead, but Holcomb closed the frame on a 7-0 burst and led 11-6 after one. They pushed their lead to double-figures in the second quarter and led by seven at the intermission, 27-20. Colby scored the first five points of the third quarter in less than a minute and were within 27-25 for the vast majority of the quarter, but just couldn’t get over that hump to tie or take the lead, and Holcomb scored five straight points to close the quarter and lead 32-25 after three. The Eagles got no closer than five in the final quarter and the Longhorns put the game to bed at the free throw line.

Wahlmeier ended the game as Colby’s top scorer with 14 points, and Ryan Myers chipped in 11. Zephyn Mason led all scorers for Holcomb with 21 points.

Hear the postgame remarks from Eagles head coach Parker McKee:

The Lady Eagles moved to 7-5 with the win while Holcomb’s girls dropped to 3-9. The Colby boys fell to 6-6 as the Longhorn boys improved to 9-3.

It’s a quick turnaround for the Eagles and Lady Eagles, as they host Hoxie on Saturday night at Colby High School.
