Lady Eagles Rout Hoxie; Eagle Boys Can’t Stop Unbeaten Indians

Dan LuceroJanuary 30, 2021

Colby’s Eagles and Lady Eagles renewed acquaintances with Hoxie on Saturday in Colby in games that were rescheduled from a postponement on January 5th.

The Lady Eagles continued their hot play of late, winning their third straight and fifth in six in a 61-31 trouncing of the Lady Indians. The Eagle boys had their hands full with the top-ranked team in class 2A, and the visiting Indians ran away with a 58-42 win to hand Colby a third straight defeat.

The Colby girls were red hot to start their game, hitting three-point shots on the first four possessions and building a 14-0 lead in the first five minutes. They led 23-9 after one quarter and stayed scalding in the second, with Kennedy Stanley’s buzzer-beating three giving the Lady Eagles a 38-15 halftime lead. Colby stretched the lead to 32 points at the end of the third quarter, meaning the fourth quarter was played with a running clock.

Brooklyn Jones dropped 23 points to pace Colby in the win. Stanley added a season-high 16 points, and Emma Curry was also in double-figures with 15. Brylee McKenna scored 10 points as Hoxie’s high scorer.

Hear the postgame remarks from Lady Eagles head coach Tom Stephens:

In an inverse of the girls game, it was Hoxie who went on a big run to start the boys contest, sprinting to an 11-0 lead and keeping Colby off the board until the final minute of the first quarter. The Eagles trailed 11-4 after one, and though they were able to get back within six points halfway through the second quarter, the Indians went on a 7-0 run to close the half and led 22-9 at the half. Hoxie scored 22 points in the third quarter to pull away and take a 44-25 lead after three, and Colby was never able to mount a significant rally in the fourth quarter.

Peyton Wahlmeier was the only Eagle in double figures, scoring 16 points. Gavin Tremblay poured in 25 points to show the way for the Indians.

Hear the postgame remarks from Eagles head coach Parker McKee:

The Lady Eagles are now 8-5 on the season, while the Hoxie girls are 6-7. Colby’s boys drop to 6-7 with the loss while Hoxie stays perfect at 12-0.

Colby returns to action on Tuesday night at Norton.
