WICHITA, KS — History was made on Saturday night at Cessna Stadium as KSHSAA officials decided to postpone the largest track meet in the nation for an unprecedented third day due to bad weather. KSHSAA only got approximately a quarter of the meet done on Saturday, before consistent rain and wind caused officials to try and complete the track meet all on Saturday. And they came close only to have two and a half running events & four field events left to finish off on Sunday before lighting entered the area.
Sunday, all that is left is couple heats left of the upper division’s mens 200 meter dash, both boys & girls 4 x 400 meter relays as well as the 1A & 3A boys javelin, 1A girls discus and the 2A girls shot put.
At the end of the day Saturday, of the 99 northwest Kansas events that qualified, 34 of them had placed inside the top eight to claim a medal. But of the 34 only three were state champions: Colby’s Lara Murdock in the 3A 3200. Trevor Medina in the 1A 800 & Oakley’s 4×800 relay team made up of Kade Hemmert, Cody Zimmerman, Eric Cain & Wyatt Abell.
13 events from NW Kansas will look to complete the long weekend of track on Sunday. Oakley’s Ellis Slack & Colby’s Xavier Slaven in the Javelin. Wallace County’s Haylee Hennick & Victoria Springsteel as well as Rawlins County’s Kristen Beckman in the discus. Also, Oakley’s Liberty Booker in the Shot Put. Plus the 4 x 400 relay teams of Golden Plains, Wallace County, Rawlins County & Oakley girls. Oakley, St. Francis & Colby boys 4×400 teams too.
The meet will resume from point of suspension tomorrow at 10:00 AM in field events and 11:00 AM track events. Gates open at 8:30.
