Kansas is sending a delegation dominated by Bernie Sanders supporters to the Democratic National Convention controlled by Hillary Clinton. Local party leaders are hoping past divisions heal enough that the presidential race here won’t be a blowout. Sanders delegates head to the convention in Philadelphia with differing opinions about whether a proposed party platform is progressive enough.
Law enforcement agencies in Topeka have been taking steps to ensure officer safety after incidents elsewhere that have claimed officers’ lives. Police Chief James Brown says the Topeka Police Department is implementing two-person patrols to some extent. The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office also is assessing some procedures. Officers in KCK and some other places in the state are taking a similar approach.
The initial court appearance is in the books for a man from Lindsborg accused of having sex with a child in the Phillippines, recording the encounter and then selling access to the video on the internet. Prosecutors claim they’ve worked the case since April, when the FBI got a tip and uncovered the content.
A new study shows that Kansas lost about $110 million each year between 1996 and 2005 _ more than $1 billion _ in the value of its High Plains aquifer. The study, conducted by a Yale University team, was led by Eli Fenichel, assistant professor at the Yale School of Forestry and Environment Studies. He says the study used the Kansas aquifer as an example to look at setting dollar amounts on “natural capital,” or natural resources such as water, fish and forests.
A Lawrence man shot by police, found guilty of charges stemming from pointing a loaded shotgun at an officer. That man was convicted of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer. The charge stemmed from a June 2014 incident when prosecutors claim he refused to drop a shotgun aimed at a Lawrence police officer who responded to a report of shots being fired. The officer used his service weapon, wounding him. Authorities earlier determined the shooting was justified. Sentencing is August 26.
