A new study shows that Kansas lost about $110 million each year between 1996 and 2005 _ more than $1 billion _ in the value of its High Plains aquifer. The study, conducted by a Yale University team, was led by Eli Fenichel, assistant professor at the Yale School of Forestry and Environment Studies. A Lawrence man shot by police, found guilty of charges stemming from pointing a loaded shotgun at an officer. That man was convicted of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer. The charge stemmed from a June 2014 incident when prosecutors claim he refused to drop a shotgun aimed at a Lawrence police officer who responded to a report of shots being fired. The officer used his service weapon, wounding him. Authorities earlier determined the shooting was justified. Sentencing is August 26.
