Kansas House and Senate negotiators who had hoped to unveil a new plan Wednesday for balancing the state budget have postponed their meeting. Republicans are divided over how much to raise taxes on more than 330,000 business owners and farmers who stopped paying income taxes on their profits a few years ago.
Kansas House Republicans are struggling to draw up a new plan to balance the state budget by raising taxes. The Senate approved a tax plan last weekend but House members say they doubt it can pass their chamber. The budget won’t balance without about $400 million in increases.
