Inmate population at Norton Correctional Facility increased prior to disturbance…and other headlines: September 7, 2017

Figures from the Kansas Department of Corrections show that the inmate population at the prison in Norton rose steadily for three months before a disturbance there. The state began double-bunking inmates in some parts of the Norton Correctional Facility this summer. The prison housed 707 inmates at the end of May. The population was 21 percent higher Tuesday at 856 inmates.
An Army veteran from Reno County gets three years of probation and has to pay $70,000 in restitution for benefits he received by pretending to be blind. That man from Turon was charged with conspiracy to defraud the government. His ex-wife was sentenced to a year on probation for helping with the scheme.
A former detective in the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office will spend four years in jail and be on probation for two years after admitting in court to lying about interviewing witnesses in a case. Erin Thompson was a deputy for more than 15 years, and was on paid administrative leave for the final two years because of the allegations. In taking a plea deal she avoided the three felony perjury counts she initially faced.
Two people from Seattle are facing drug charges after a traffic stop on I-70 in Geary County. The two are charged with suspicion of possession with intent to sell, along with possession of drug paraphernalia, and no drug tax stamp.
The Kansas State University physics department gets  a $1.5 million grant to improve an online professional development tool for physics teachers. The National Science Foundation awarded the grant to an associate professor of physics. She is working on a research project that investigates how an online tool called PhysPort affects teaching practices in physics classes.
