ICYMI: CCC Men’s Basketball Defeats McCook

COLBY, Kan. — The Colby Community College Men’s Basketball team moved to 4-1 on the season with an 81-71 win over McCook Community College last night.

The Trojans took a five point lead into the locker room, but McCook wouldn’t quit. A 13-1 run by the Indians to begin the second half prompted a timeout by CCC Head Coach Rusty Elmore.

“I should probably ask for forgiveness for that huddle,” said Elmore after the game.

Following that timeout, the Trojans got back on track, turning an eight point deficit into a lead, and putting more defensive pressure on McCook.

Due to foul trouble, Colby’s Matt McFarlane was only able to play for about 20 minutes of the contest before fouling out late in the second half. In his place, the Trojans found a trio of offensive weapons who totaled 57 points between them.

Eddie Davis (6-7, SO, Port St. Lucie, FL) lead all scorers in the game with 27 points, tying his career-high, set twice last season.

“My three-point shot hasn’t been falling the last couple games, so Coach’s been telling me ‘don’t settle, don’t settle, get to the rim, get to the rim,’ and that’s what’s been working,” said Davis, who went on to say a bigger focus tonight was his defensive rebounding. He finished with five defensive boards and eight in total.

Behind Davis, Demarcus Sharp (6-4, SO, Charleston, MO) netted 16 points and played all 40 minutes of the contest, while Javion May (6-2, SO, Chicago, IL) was right behind him with 14 points of his own.

Coach Elmore praised the total team effort on a night where it was much needed. Throughout the night, there were nine ties and 10 lead changes before Colby finally took complete control in the final minutes, stretching to their largest lead of 12 points with just nine seconds left.

McCook would snag a layup at the buzzer, but it wouldn’t change the outcome, as the Trojans snapped their brief one-game losing skid.

The win established a good amount of confidence in a group that will surely need it in the coming days, beginning a stretch of five games in eight days, starting with New Mexico Junior College on Friday night at 5:30 PM in Goodland, Kan.
