Great Defense, Perfect Free Throw Shooting the Recipe for CCC Win

COLBY, Kan. — Coming off their first loss of the 2019-2020 campaign, the Colby Community College Women’s Basketball team needed a spark to get things back on track. Monday night, they found exactly that, with suffocating defense.

The Trojans forced Hesston College into 30 turnovers in the game, and scored 26 points off of those turnovers. The great defense turned into solid offense as well. Colby shot 44.3% from the field on the night, and 50% from 3-point range.

Coach Antwain Scales and his team took control of the game early, outscoring the Larks 21-11 in the first quarter, and never looked back. The lead continued to multiply each quarter, until Colby reached their largest lead of 46 points, before taking their foot off the gas.

The large advantage provided the opportunity for Coach Scales to see contributions from players he might not have had the chance to in the first several games of the season. Each Trojan that saw action in the game, scored, and Colby’s bench scored 43 points total.

Four Trojans scored in double figures, lead by 12 from Kiara Knight (SO, G, Hobbs, NM), who did all her damage from long distance, shooting 4/7 from 3-point range. Imari Grayson (SO, G, Wichita, KS), Brittanie Brickhouse (FR, G, Wichita, KS), and Alize Ruiz (FR, G, Las Cruces, NM) all added 10 points on the night as well.

Perhaps the most impressive number from the night, was Colby’s performance at the free throw line. A perfect 18/18 on the night, adding to an already sterling evening at the Colby Community Building.

When the buzzer sounded, the Trojans found themselves back in the win column with a convincing 85-45 victory over Hesston College, in what is the team’s final home game of the calendar year. CCC will be on the road Wednesday night at Cloud County Community College in Concordia, Kansas for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off, before heading southeast for their 2019 finale at Allen County Community College on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans will be back home in Colby on Saturday, January 4th, 2020 against Cowley County Community College at 3:00 p.m.
