The season came to an end for the last two area volleyball teams standing on Saturday as the Goodland Cowgirls and the Wheatland-Grinnell Lady Thunderhawks competed in the final four of their respected state tournaments.
Unfortunately neither team got the ending they had hoped for as both teams finished in fourth place.
For Goodland, who came into the 3A state tournament at Hutchison with a 29 match winning streak, they could never find the magic that made their 2020 season so special as they lost all three of their pool play matches to West Franklin (18-25, 19-25), Smoky Valley (25-21, 22-25 & 20-25) & Sabetha (17-25, 18-25).
Then in bracket play they lost in their semifinal match, again to the top-seed Sabetha in two sets: 13-25 & 25-21. And in their final match of the day lost in two sets again to West Franklin (23-25 &22-25).
Wheatland-Grinnell also lost all five of their matches but were a bit more competitive. Lady Thunderhawks lost in three sets to Hutch Central Christian (22-25, 26-24 & 20-25) as well as Attica (25-17, 20-25 & 20-25). Then was swept by Hanover: 16-25 & 13-25 to complete pool play.
Then in bracket play they they were swept by eventual state champion Hanover 12-15 & 16-25 in the semifinals and then were beat 23-25 & 18-25 by Hutch Central Christian.
With it’s five losses to end the season Goodland finished 2020 at 34-10 overall. But was GWAC regular season & tournament champs. And also was champs of the Scott City Substate & NW Kansas quarterfinal.
Wheatland-Grinnell finished 2020 at 24-20 overall.
