SYRACUSE, Kan — Well you could ask for a more entertaining night to open up the 2019-20 basketball season as Goodland spilt a double-header of hoops with Syracuse. Cowgirls winning 38-32 while the Cowboys fell 53-49.
Cowgirls 38 Lady Bulldogs 32
The Cowgirls got out the to an early 5-2 lead thanks to senior Taighe Weeter’s quick layup and three pointer. After that though Syracuse would go on to score 14 unanswered points and lead 16-5. But Goodland would respond switching to a 1-3-1 defense and forced 8 turnovers out of the Bulldogs and hold them to just points in the second period and both teams would head into half tied at 18.
The second half was a back and forth affair with Goodland taking the lead heading into the fourth quarter 32-38 thanks in part to Mikayla Biermann’s four points off of turnovers and Kerrigan Rudolph’s six points in the paint. The fourth quarter was more of a defensive struggle as the team combined to score just 10 points. Goodland’s Sydney Hahn help close the door with four of her seven points coming in the final period.
It was a very balanced night for Goodland with multiple girls contributing. Kerrigan Rudolph led the way with 8 points. Taighe Weeter & Sydney Hahn added seven points each and Emma Lehman had six points. Freshman Olivia Lehman led the team in rebounding with six. Cowgirls forced 26 turnovers out of the Bulldogs, which was the real deciding stat as GHS ended a two game losing streak to Syracuse & snap a seven-game losing streak dating back to last year.
Syracuse was led by Carly Kullot who had 15 points & eight rebounds. Margo Stum set a career high in rebounds with 13 while also adding seven points.
Bulldogs 53 Cowboys 49
In the boys game the Goodland got out to a 16-12 lead by the end of the opening period thanks in part to Trevor Daise’s performance inside score six points in the first in his first ever varsity basketball start. The game remaind tight through the second as the team trading baskets but Goodland would leading heading into halftime 28-25.
Things got really exciting in the third quarter as Goodland’s two best shooters came alive in Brennan Brumbaugh and Henry Cole. Cole buried three triples in the period alone while Brumbaugh hit another, his second of the game.
Going into the fourth Goodland’s lead was down to just one 40-39 and quickly was gone due to Syracuse’s ability to attack the basket and get kick-out open three’s. Syracuse’s Cody Doze led the charge with seven points in the period. The Cowboys offense slowed up in the fourth and could only muster nine points, four of which coming from Daise who had a career night with 12 points & 4 rebounds.
Cowboys were led by Cole who set a career high in points scored with 22. Brumbaugh had just six points but a career high eight rebounds.
Syracuse got a career high 16 points from Doze, and career high 12 points & 8 rebounds from Austin Plunkett as the Bulldogs topped Goodland for the second straight year.
