ULYSSES, KS — The Goodland Cowgirl softball team split their double-header with the Ulysses Tiger yesterday afternoon. GHS took game one 8-3 but would then lose in game two 16-6 in just six innings.
In the first inning, Goodland (2-4 overall, 2-2 in GWAC) got their offense started when Taitem Ketters singled on a 2-2 pitch, scoring a run. GHS would go on to notch three runs in the second frame. Thanks to a groundout by Atalee Amthor and an error on a ball put in play by Sara Syverson. Brooke Livengood earned the victory in the circle for the Cowgirls going seven innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out three. Syverson, Amthor, Ketter, and Livengood each managed one hit to lead Goodland.
Jyntri Moyer took the loss for Ulysses (1-5 overall, 1-3 in GWAC) giving up four hits and eight runs over seven innings, striking out five. Ulysses tore up the base paths, as two players stole at least two bases. Gina Ballersteros led the way with two.
After a good start Goodland struggled to contain the offense of Ulysses, giving up 16 runs. In the first inning, Goodland got their offense started when Atalee Amthor doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. GHS put up three runs in the second inning. The offensive was led Shay Smith, Amthor, and Brooke Livengood, all knocking in runs in the inning. Smith hit her first career homer in the second frame and and Amthor went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Goodland in hits. But Ulysses pulled away for good with 12 runs in the third inning.
Jyntri Moyer took the win for Ulysses. She went four innings, allowing six runs on five hits and striking out four. Corrall threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Livengood took the loss for Goodland Cowgirls Varsity. She surrendered nine runs on five hits over two and a third innings.
Goodland will host Hays TMP on Friday.
