HUGOTON, KS — The Goodland Cowgirls were able to find the win column for the first time this season as they defeated Hugoton 23-10 & 16-7 in their Tuesday double-header.
Offense was not an issue for either team in game number one as each team scored at least one run in each half inning of the first three frames. Goodland would lead 9-8 heading into the fourth and would then outscore the Lady Eagles 14 to two over the last four innings to pull away for the 23-10 win.
The 23 runs scored (on 23 hits) were the most by GHS this season, Jaxi Mitchek was unreal at the plate going six for six with six RBI’s. Makayla Wolak was also really good going three for five with five RBI’s for the Cowgirls. Pitcher Anna Gutierrez earned the win striking out a career-high nine betters while allowing ten runs on 11 hits but only four runs were earned due to GHS’ issues with errors again, committing eight in game one.
Game two Goodland got down right away in the first as Hugoton’s Juliene Salazer hit an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the first but from that point forward it was all Cowgirls. Goodland hung up six runs in the second and then another six in the third to lead 12-3 going into the fourth inning. Each team would score four more runs the rest of the way with GHS putting three of the four up in the top of the seventh for a little insurance on their way to a 16-7 win.
Cowgirls once again had the same amount of runs (16) as hits. Gutierrez was really good at the plate going four for six with four RBI’s. Fellow seniors Atalee Amthor & Makayla Wolak each drove in a pair in the win. In the circle, Mitchek also set a career-high for strikeouts with eight while allowing seven runs with six of them being earned to get the win. She also walked seven hitters. But, Goodland for the first time this season didn’t commit an error.
The wins put an end to a four game losing streak to start the year for GHS who is now 2-4 overall. It was as the first wins in GWAC play for the Cowgirls who are now 2-2 against league foes. The losses for Hugoton drop them to 2-4 overall & 0-4 in GWAC play.
Up next: Goodland will have their home opener next Tuesday, April 13th, against unbeaten Russell.
