GARDEN CITY, KS — After struggling in their season opener at rival Colby this past Tuesday the Goodland Cowgirl softball team looked better but remained winless in 2021 losing both games at Garden City on Thursday afternoon.

Game one was the game that Goodland certainly took a step forward in their progression as a team. Despite getting down 7-0 after the first inning, due to starter Jaxi Mitcheck walking the first three batters she saw, Goodland hung around against the 6A Lady Buffaloes.  GHS got a run back in the second & then would push three across in the third inning making it 10-4 going into the fifth inning. Goodland would cut the Garden lead in half in the fifth but in the bottom half of the frame Garden City’s Brie Manwarren hit a three run home run to make it 14-5 and GCHS would put up another fun in the sixth to end the game early due to the run rule, 15-5.

Anna Gutierrez, who came in to pitch after just 13 pitches thrown by Mitchek gave up 12 runs, nine earned with a pair of strikeouts. Gutierrez also had an RBI in the loss. Mitchek had a good game one with the bat going three for four with an RBI.  Haley Biermann & Makayla Wolak also each drove in a run in a losing effort.

Game two saw Goodland take a bit of step back as the bats struggled to put the ball in play as only Haley Biermann was able to register any hits for GHS going two for three with two runs scored. Atatlee Amthor scored the other run. Goodland led early 2-0 but was outscored the rest of game two 17-1 to lose 17-3 in just five innings.

Mitchek who started game two after struggling in game one came back and worked two innings allowing eight runs but only two were earned but also walked five batters. Gutierrez finished out the game allowing nine for runs but only two earned and did give up another home run.

Errors were a problem again for Goodland as they committed 10 on the day. Other issues included 12 walks issued by Cowgirl pitching and Goodland batters being struck out 20 times over the double header.

The losses dropped Goodland to 0-4 to start the season while Garden City improved to 2-0 as it was their season opener. Cowgirls will be on the road again this coming Tuesday, April 6th at Hugoton in GWAC action.
