There is no denying that last season for the Goodland girls tennis program had its ups and downs. But that can be expected when it was just the first year of the program.
“The girls started out really excited but I could sense the frustrations throughout (the year) learning a new sport,” said second year head coach Ali Hollern talking about last season.
Last year Goodland did not have a single girl who had really played competitive tennis. Some of the girls didn’t even have a full understanding of the game when the year began and the head coach wasn’t quite sure how she was going to go about doing her job as it was her first year coaching.
But year two has the sense of more stability and understanding, even if the Cowgirls only return one player from last season in sophomore Hailey Kent. Coach Hollern says Kent has improved so much from last year and should be good player for the others on the team to look too. A couple of new faces have joined the team, coming over from another sport, in senior Atalee Amthor & junior Eve Cole. They both look to add some more athleticism to the roster here in 2020.
Coach Hollern said she wanted to get the girls into some match play early and they will do just that as their season begins September 3rd against Hays.
