Seasons like the 2019 one the Goodland Cowgirl golf team experienced last year don’t come around too often. The Cowgirls completed the “perfect” season last year winning every tournament they competed in and capped it off with a State Championship and earning the title of the 3A Team of the Year according to Catch It Kansas.
The upcoming 2020 season looks, on paper, to be a different type of season and GHS will have to replace their top four scorers. The only returner is senior Ashtin McClung who was the number-five golfer on the team last season. Unfortunately for Goodland they also lost a potential contributor due to transfer to another school. So basically the Cowgirls will be starting from scratch but head coach Connie Livengood is not giving up on the season.
“I don’t count out going to state this year even though it may be harder due to having three regionals and not four. But with hard work, determination and a little bit more practice I’m not going to count my girls out.”
Goodland has ten girls out and five of them seniors but only one of them (McClung) has any true varsity experience.
“It is wide open,” Livengood said when talking about who her top six golfers would be going into the season opener at Hugoton on September 3rd.
