HUGOTON, KS — Both basketball teams for Goodland High School were hoping to start 2019 off with wins but Hugoton would have none of that taking both games in southwest Kansas on Friday night. Goodland girls fell 52-47 while the boys lost 72-35.
It looked like a little history was going to be made in the girls contest as Goodland (2-5, 1-2 in GWAC) led by three and playing well heading into the fourth quarter 39-36. But the Cowgirls hopes of knocking off the Lady Eagles for the first time since 2011 came crashing down when Hugoton was able to go on a 16 to eight run to close the contest and earn their 3rd win of the season and snap a three game skid.
Hugoton had three girls score in double figures led by sophomore Jordyn Beard who had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Goodland’s Brooke Drennan, led all scorers with a season high 16 points, while teammate Emma Lehman had a career high 9 points.
It was even a rougher night for the Cowboys (0-7, 0-3 in GWAC) who were outmatched versus a very deep and skilled Eagle squad. Goodland hung around for a quarter only trailing by nine but would be out scored 29-5 in the second quarter and would never be able to get back into it. Goodland was out-rebounded by 17 and allowed over 20 second chance points.
Henry Cole led GHS with 9 points while senior Chase Johnson & Ryan Volk scored six points & seven points respectively. Hugoton had 11 different players score led by Michael Mirabal & Damian Lewis who each had 13 points.
Goodland will host rival Colby while Hugoton play Holcomb on Tuesday.
