Goodland Hoops Drops Two at Norton

Ross VolkmerJanuary 31, 2020

Both Goodland basketball teams headed to Norton on Friday to face the Bluejays in their second to last non-league game of the season. Norton completed the sweep winning both contests. Girls winning 51-45 & boys winning 66-44.

COWGIRLS 45   LADY JAYS 51

Turnovers and the inability to figure out a 3-2 zone did the Goodland Cowgirls in, in their 51-45 loss at Norton on Friday.

Goodland got off a good start leading 11-8 thanks in part to threes from Emma Lehman and Taighe Weeter. But GHS committed six turnovers in the opening period and that would double by the end of the second allowing Norton to outscore Goodland 18-8 and lead 26-19 at half.

Goodland would cut down on the turnovers in the second half and would draw within three, 37-34 at the end of the third. Talexa Weeter led the charge hitting three three’s in that quarter alone. Norton closed out the fourth quarter and the game by bleeding the clock out and using Tessa Hauser’s 6-3 size to their advantage as she would score seven points in the period.

Goodland had three girls score in double figures led by Taighe Weeter with 15. Talexa Weeter had 14 and Emma Lehman added 11. Norton also had three girls score double figures. Tessa Hauser had a game-high 19 points and ten rebounds. Tayli Hartwell had 12 & Hannah Bailey added 11. For Hauser it was her 10th career double-double. Goodland ended up committing 20 turnovers but went an impressive 8 of 16 from three.

Lady Jays are now 7-6 with the win. The loss dropped Goodland to 6-8. Norton’s victory avenged their earlier season loss to the Cowgirls at the Topside Tipoff Tournament and now lead the series 14-8 since 2006.

COWBOYS 44   BLUEJAYS 66

The Cowboys had no answer for Norton’s rebound tenacity as GHS got out boarded 38-17 in what turned out to be a comfortable win for Norton, 66-44.

Three first quarter triples for Goodland kept them close at the end of the first 16-13 but from that point forward Norton just pulled away. Norton outscored GHS 16-7 in the second and led 32-30 at halftime. The Bluejays Kade Melvin & Jonah Ruder combined to score more points, 22,  than Goodland had as a team. The second half saw Norton just pull away a little more each quarter until the final buzzer sounded with Norton winning by a comfortable 22 points.

Henry Cole was the only Cowboy to hit double figures with 12. Matt Nemechek & Brennan Brumbaugh each added seven points. Norton’s Kade Melvin and Jonah Ruder combined to score 40 points, 18 from Ruder & 22 from Melvin. Ruder’s 18 points was a career-high. Goodland only went 3 of 13 from three.

Norton now leads the series since 2006, 15-5 and has won nine of the last 10 meetings and has won four in a row. The win was Norton’s third in a row to improve to 8-4 on the year as they won their third straight. Goodland fell for the 12th straight time this season to drop to 1-13 overall.

Mikey Doll Postgame:
