Holcomb, KS — After dropping their first games of the season to Burlington the Goodland baseball team got into the win column Tuesday by splitting with Holcomb. Dropping game one 6-5 in eight innings and bouncing back to take game two 11-3.
Game one turned into being quite the pitchers duel between the Cowboys & Longhorns. Trevor Daise pitched into the fourth, not allowing a hit but had to dance around multiple baserunners during his outing. While Corbin Goddard thru five complete innings striking out a career high eight hitters for HHS. Chase Johnson, Ryan Volk & Brock Mull each had a multi-hit game with Mull & Volk each driving in a run. Mull also scored twice. Goodland held leads in the 4th, 6th & 8th innings but Holcomb answered each time capped off by a three RBI double by River Amos to win in walk-off fashion for the Longhorns.
Game two was all Goodland led by a stellar first-ever start on the mound for junior Henry Cole. Cole thru a complete game five-hitter to lead GHS to their first win of the season. But the Goodland bats were also hot from the start putting up five runs in the first and continued to score insurance runs in the 3rd, 4th, 6th & 7th on their way to a season high 11 runs on just eight hits. Joel Alanis had a three RBI game while Brock Mull, Chase Johnson, Henry Cole & DJ Knox all scored two or more runs.
As for the Cowgirl softball team. They split with Holcomb too. GHS took game one 18-3 in four innings. Longhorns took game two 10-8.
The Cowboys (1-3) will host Syracuse (0-5) on Thursday. Cowgirls (1-3) will be at Ulysses (0-4) next Tuesday.
